Hunting Solstice Ultra 53 Miles 30 Miles 10 Miles

Run 4 a Reason|Rough Runners is hosting Hunting Solstice, a challenging ultra race where runners run a 7.7 mile course through pine and oak forest trails as well as a traverse through a beach covered in tree cadavers. This is a summer race and bound to be hot and humid. The terrain may prove to be quite challenging as some of the course is single track with abrupt elevation changes. The beach section is especially challenging at high tide. Ropes will be tied to the tree cadavers the entire length of the beach course as a guide and for security as the runners navigate waters that may be chest deep at high tide.

Runners will claim their medals atop the lighthouse upon completion of their race. Only six people at a time may be on the lighthouse. Runners will cross the finish line first and then, climb the 267 steps to the top of the lighthouse to retrieve their finisher’s medal. The race clock for each runner will stop when the runners cross the finish line

Course logistics: runners will run trails, beaches and, some roads within the park

Runners start by the lighthouse and run toward the beach.

They go south on the beach until Cabin road. Runners follow  Cabin road to parking lot. They then catch the Palmetto Pass connector trail, to Diamondback snake trail.

Follow Diamondback Snake trail to the Nature Center Scenic trail to the southernmost parking lot of the park. There will be a turnaround there.

You will then follow the Nature Center Scenic trail to the Little Hunting Island loop trail.

The Little Hunting Loop trail will bring you back to NCS trail again. You will then catch the Lagoon Access trail to Cabin rd and parking lot.  On Cabin road, go south on the beach until you do the turnaround.

With the turnaround, you will head back up the beach to the Lighthouse.

Go back to the lighthouse and hit the turnaround there and head back to repeat the course the appropriate number of times to complete your registered race distance.

For one of the beach sections (roughly one third of a mile), ropes will be tied from tree to tree as a guide through the course. The ropes will be especially useful if the tide is high as it may be chest deep (4 to 5 feet deep). Runners may bring a flotation vest for this section. They may leave their life preservers at the end of this beach section.

Trails the runners will run on are named: Rattle snake trail. Lagoon Access trail. There are connector trails they will run too.
